How Do You Know If You Need AC Repair?
Knowing the signs of an air conditioning malfunction can help you identify pending problems before they become a huge headache. It's important to have your unit inspected at the first sign of an issue to prevent bigger, costly repairs down the road.
Your AC May Need Repair If:
The airflow isn't as strong as it used to be. If the AC has weak airflow, make sure your filters are changed and all of your settings are correct. Check the vents to make sure there is no debris blocking the air. Especially if you have pets that shed hair a lot, you’ll find that particles and hair will get trapped and cause the airflow to slow down. The unit is over 10 years old. Your AC unit can last a decade or more when properly cared for, but it only has this kind of longevity when you take care of the routine maintenance and have it serviced annually. There are many tasks that you can perform on your own, but a yearly check-up will ensure that everything is running smoothly. The thermostat temperature doesn't match the indoor temperature. If the airflow is good but the temperature in your home doesn’t match the reading on the AC thermostat, then you have a problem. There might be an issue with your thermostat, but it could also be an issue with the unit itself. The AC is making unusual noises. If your AC unit seems like it’s working hard or you hear sounds that aren’t normal, you’ll want to have your unit checked out. There are many different factors that can cause this. Sometimes a piece of debris may get trapped in the unit and is easily removed, and other times it can be more severe.
AC Repair Vs. Replacement
In the Texas heat, you have two options when your AC breaks down: repair or replacement. After an expert inspects your unit, they may find that all it needs is a simple fix to get going again. Sometimes, though, the unit is beyond repair or too old to justify a fix. In some cases, replacement is the more cost-effective, long-term solution.
Your AC May Need To Be Replaced If:
It's old or outdated. Exactly how long your AC lasts depends on the brand, how it’s used and how well it’s maintained by a licensed professional. If the AC is more than 8 years old you may opt to replace the unit as opposed to sinking more money into a unit that’s coming close to the end of its life. It needs repair after repair. If you’ve had multiple repairs over the last few years you should consider a replacement. While our Benbrook AC repair experts are always willing to repair your AC, it shouldn't need a fix every season. It requires outdated parts for repair. Since the beginning of 2020, all manufacturing of R22 Freon has ceased. Using the banned coolant is still permissible but it’s only going to get more expensive as it becomes increasingly scarce. If your AC requires banned or outdated parts, it may be time to replace it.

On arrival house plumbing p trap was clogged. I removed the clog and ran 2 gallons of water through it without any sign of backing up. Spoke with plumber and it would back up with that quantity of water if it were still clogged.

Arrived for STU #IAQ filter fine Drains clear with rusted through drain pan Blower and coil dusty Heat strips fine Condenser coil clean Motors, capacitors, and refrigerant fine No low voltage protection present UV system recommended for biological growth in the system
For this rec work I went back and installed a new wet switch because the old one has failed. Upon leaving I checked and the system was running as normal and the thermostat was set to 70⁰
On arrival system was off due to wet switch being tripped. I verified that the drain line is not clogged. System ran and produced a 20 degree delta. Low side saturation temperature at 42 with new filter in. As I left system running and cooling.
For this evaluation I showed up to the customers house and they stated their AC has not worked since March when we were last out here, and their thermostat would not work. I looked at the wet switch and neither of the lights were on signifying it had no power. I had high voltage but no call for cool from the thermostat. I unwired the wet switch and jumped R-Y and the unit turned on. I will be pausing this call until I get a new wet switch to come install.
For this evaluation I showed up to the customer's home and they stated their water alarm was going off consistently. When I opened up the air handler there was water on the platform it was sitting on, the air handler is right next to the hot water heater and there was water filling the water heater pan which in turn was leaking into the air handler and setting off the water alarm. This is not an HVAC issue, and I informed the customer I could set up an appointment for a plumber to come out but she stated she has her own and she will get in contact with them. I vacuumed out the water in the pan and on the platform the best I could but water was slowly continuing to seep out from underneath.
Fan was on instead of auto. So I put some red tape over fan button that way he know which buttons are which and now he is aware of how to use thermos stat
