How Do You Know If You Need AC Repair?
Knowing the signs of an air conditioning malfunction can help you identify pending problems before they become a huge headache. It's important to have your unit inspected at the first sign of an issue to prevent bigger, costly repairs down the road.
Your AC May Need Repair If:
The airflow isn't as strong as it used to be. If the AC has weak airflow, make sure your filters are changed and all of your settings are correct. Check the vents to make sure there is no debris blocking the air. Especially if you have pets that shed hair a lot, you’ll find that particles and hair will get trapped and cause the airflow to slow down. The unit is over 10 years old. Your AC unit can last a decade or more when properly cared for, but it only has this kind of longevity when you take care of the routine maintenance and have it serviced annually. There are many tasks that you can perform on your own, but a yearly check-up will ensure that everything is running smoothly. The thermostat temperature doesn't match the indoor temperature. If the airflow is good but the temperature in your home doesn’t match the reading on the AC thermostat, then you have a problem. There might be an issue with your thermostat, but it could also be an issue with the unit itself. The AC is making unusual noises. If your AC unit seems like it’s working hard or you hear sounds that aren’t normal, you’ll want to have your unit checked out. There are many different factors that can cause this. Sometimes a piece of debris may get trapped in the unit and is easily removed, and other times it can be more severe.
AC Repair Vs. Replacement
In the Texas heat, you have two options when your AC breaks down: repair or replacement. After an expert inspects your unit, they may find that all it needs is a simple fix to get going again. Sometimes, though, the unit is beyond repair or too old to justify a fix. In some cases, replacement is the more cost-effective, long-term solution.
Your AC May Need To Be Replaced If:Â
It's old or outdated. Exactly how long your AC lasts depends on the brand, how it’s used and how well it’s maintained by a licensed professional. If the AC is more than 8 years old you may opt to replace the unit as opposed to sinking more money into a unit that’s coming close to the end of its life. It needs repair after repair. If you’ve had multiple repairs over the last few years you should consider a replacement. While our Benbrook AC repair experts are always willing to repair your AC, it shouldn't need a fix every season. It requires outdated parts for repair. Since the beginning of 2020, all manufacturing of R22 Freon has ceased. Using the banned coolant is still permissible but it’s only going to get more expensive as it becomes increasingly scarce. If your AC requires banned or outdated parts, it may be time to replace it.

2011 3.5t goodman hp closet upflow. System performance evaluation - Upon inspection of the evaporator coil, at the top of the intake side, on both sides are discoloration which at a glance seems like oil and refrigerant staining. Performed a courtesy leak detection and as soon as I put my detector to the surface the alarm went off. To confirm, I put my refrigerant guages on and checked for proper superheat and subcool; both were outside of the appropriate tolerance range. Leak confirmed. Furthermore, the 45/5 dual run capacitor, when tested underload was over 20% deficient per manufacturers tolerance of 5% - a failing part and extreme stress on systemcomponents. Blower wheel is dirty and indoor cabin is filled with biological growth. DeltaT of 14°. I discussed and shared all information to both homeowners. The Son called and I explained to him as well. Estimates made for system restoration and emailed. CA appointment set for 10/16/24 @10am confirmed. Son will attempt to be avai
For this job I installed a new air handler disconnect. Wired it accordingly and left with the system running and cooling.
Upon arrival tech was shown to the condenser and airhandler tech started at the airhandler. Once tech got all his readings tech went out side where tech found the duel run capacitor was not in range underload test as well as tech found burn marks on the contacter tech washed and waxed the condenser once tech was finished with the condenser tech got his inrush amps and they were at 87.
On arrival system running and cooling with no issues producing a 21 degree delta. Indoor unit clean, outdoor unit passed all electrical testing. I recommended upgrading uv systems to the iaq 200 due to its increase efficiency and effacy. Once installed system back on and cooling.
Upon arrival tech was shown to the condenser and air handler techs started with the condenser unit once tech got done making sure everything was okay with the condenser tech went to the air handler where tech found that the y1 wire was lose and causing the off and on the unit was doing per customer. Tech fixed y1
Upon arrival, tech was shown to the air handler and condenser. Tech started at the condenser with washing and waxing. Once tech was done washing the condenser tech put the condenser back together. After tech got his readings from the condenser, tech went to attic and saw that the drain was having build up tech suggested cleaning the drain tech also saw a UV bolt that was out and was not efficient enough anymore. Homeowners said he would like to look to find 1st and then call us back If he cannot find one. Everything other than the uv bulb and drain the unit looked up to standards

Install 48k heat pump outdoor with disconnect and whip
Upon arrival tech started with the condenser tech took apart the condenser and cleand and waxed it. the inrush amps were at 121 tech got the restoration his readings and headed to the upflow airhandler. Tech took it apart where tech saw that the uv bulb was not working properly it needs to be changed out tech got his deltas as well as everything else tech had suggested a uv bulb replacement and a compressor saver to help with the inrush amps
Upon arrival tech was shown to the air handler and thermostats tech started at the thermostats once tech got all his reading tech moved to the condenser tech had gotten the inrush amps of 127 tech also found a hole in thr condenser coil. Tech talked to home owner about the leak and showed her the leak.
2014 condenser inrush amps are exceeding manufacturers LRA data WITH a compressor saver. Condenser fan motor bearings are compromised, back and forth play on motor shaft. Homeowner claims the refrigerant lines "clank" and are very disruptive. I discussed options of running the refrigerant lines outside of wall to eliminate the issue. Disconnect pull out has arking marks. High voltage coming into primary electrical control contractor wires are compromised. Homeowner agrees it's best not to put any more money into the 2013 condenser unit and that he's "got his monies worth". Upon purchase of a new condenser unit, please pull off compressor saver from old and install in new. CA appointment set for 10/4/24 10am confirmed.
Everything at factory specs clean condenser eating looked good and cooling at a Delta was within parameters
Stu completed, EVAP coil clean, uv light operating properly Blower motor is clean and operating efficiently Refrigerant levels acceptable, electrical connections and components acceptable System is on and operating efficiently
Install Goodman 24k electric hz upstairs and 48k hz heat pump downstairs use current filtration systems, includes code kits, relocate upstairs thermostat to bedroom
Have to figure a good day to do a panel replacement I will call next week on Wednesday to give her an update on some questions she had regarding the other work getting done and the dates for panel replacement
Tech Cody arrived to customer's home and met the homeowner. Furnace is a 14yo Goodman, Outdoor unit data tag was unreadable. INDOORS: Replaced filter, temperature split of20 degrees, blower is extremely dirty I recommended cleaning it, blower capacitor was out of tolerance I recommended replacement. Evaporator coil was clean and the supply plenum was clean. OUTDOORS: data tag was unreadable so I'm not sure if compressor and fan motor were operating within manufacturer range. Compressor on start up pulls 89.6 amps, compressor while running pulls 13amps and the fan motor while running pulls .8 amps. Both motor run capacitors were within tolerance and the primary electrical control was in good condition. System refrigerant charge was low according to my guages, I was unable to pin point the leak point. I shared my findings with the homeowner and recommended repairs needed, he asked me to email him the estimates. System was cooling when I left.
Arrived for service Eval Dual run cap failed Replaced. Added membership Morris and refrigerant fine UV recommended for the growth in the supply plenum
9/20/24 Arrived to Homeowner, some discrepancy about the time frame. I offered to reschedule to allow me to perform the best service and homeowner was very happy with that option due to his schedule and there being two systems. Reschedule for Thursday 9-26-24 1st call
On arrival customer stated condenser wasalong loud rattling noise this morning but has since quit. I found no issues electrically on the outdoor unit. Fan motor is the most likely culprit. If the issue reoccurs he will have us out to do replace the motor. Also discussed the benefits of a soft start kit versus a hard start kit.
Quoted a level 1 24k straight cool horizontal and a level 3 48k heat pump horizontal for $21,660. Customer wants to discuss with wife
Arrive for service Eval Drain line clogged. Soaked the finger and froze the coil Defrosted coil Drain line broke whole clearing it. Rebuilt entire primary drain Replaced both UV bulbs and corrected placement of the UVV bulb System cooling at exit with good refrigerant levels and no leaks on drain line
Arrived for service Eval Filter has been in the unit for several years as Homeowner was unaware it was there Eval Coil leaking refrigerant Comfort Advisor tomorrow 9 am
