It’s a hot summer day so you turn in your AC unit to cool down. But you notice that the temperature isn’t cooling off inside. When you go outside, you notice the AC unit isn’t running at all meaning your house won’t get cool and you won’t be comfortable. So what can cause the outside unit to not turn in and what can be done about it?

Double Check the Thermostat

One of the first things you can do is double-check the thermostat to ensure the temperature is set accurately. Set the temperature about five degrees below where you want it to see if the AC unit will kick in and begin cooling. If it does, great! If not, it’s time to explore other options.

Inspect the Shut-Off Switch

Every AC unit has a shut-off switch, both inside on the thermostat and outside near the unit. One of these two switches may have accidentally been turned off. Check each switch to be sure it is in the “on” position so the outside AC unit can fire up and cool down the home as needed.

Look at the Breaker Box

A tripped breaker could also be the culprit when an AC unit won’t turn on. If a tripped breaker is the problem, then correcting it should cause the unit to die right up. If the breaker trips again, contact a professional AC technician as it could be a sign of a bigger problem.

Check the Condensation Line

The condensation line can get clogged with leaves and debris over time. If the drain line is clogged, it will cause the AC unit to automatically turn off.  Remove the debris and clean out the condensation line to see if the unit will begin working once again. If you aren’t comfortable with this step a Comfort Experts AC technician can inspect the unit, clean the line, and get the outside unit working once again.

Call the Professionals

Some problems are bigger than quick fixes. When nothing else seems to work, it’s time to call the expert AC professionals to take a look at your AC unit. They will look for problems and make necessary repairs to get the AC unit working once again.
